
Leaving one's home country can not only create distance from their homeland but also distance from their culture and family.
The intended audience for this project are individuals who experience isolation from their cultural communities due to language barriers and yearn to have closer connections to their cultural identities.


The two typefaces I chose were meant to contrast each other, in a way that English and Filipino dialects sound and feel different. I used "Freight" to represent English, since I thought that it looked more poised and "Obviously" since it felt more expressive.

CONTEXT
Starting from the root
When gathering content for this project, I wanted to find ways to represent my ideas through typography and colour.
I collected a mood board of Filipino graphic design and saw how it reflected Filipino language and dialects. I also asked family and friends what they thought about our language and culture.
Three words kept coming up throughout this process: loud, proud, and colourful.



Takeaways
This was my first time working on a publication project and it ended up being one of my favourite projects!
I learned how to work with systems within design (e.g. typographic systems, grids, and visual language) and how to visually communicate my ideas. It also gave me an opportunity to get familiar with Filipino culture and graphic design.
